Pondero Winchester – Inspiring women of Winchester

“Inspiring Women of Winchester” will offer insights into a number of women who have contributed to Winchester’s story, from Emma of Normandy, twice Queen of England in the 1000s, through to Victorian pioneers, Josephine Butler and Mary Sumner. Along the way, Sue will touch on some very special ladies including Juliana the laundress who made legal history, Licoricia, the Jewish business woman who was one of the richest in the land and, of course, it would be rude not to mention Jane Austen, whose grave is one of the most visited sites in Winchester Cathedral.

Sue has been guiding locals and visitors around our wonderful City for more than ten years and has a wealth of knowledge and trivia to share on the subject of all things Wintonian. She is a Blue Badge Tourist Guide accredited by the British Institute of Tourist Guides and is currently Chair of the Winchester Area Tourist Guides Association. Sue was previously a City of London lawyer, but has been delighted to swap corporate tax for the constant fascination of Winchester’s rich history. She lives in St Cross.

Sue and her colleagues offer regular walking tours of Winchester. Daily tours cover historical aspects of the Upper City (up to the Great Hall) and Lower City (down to Wolvesey Palace). In addition, the Winchester guides offer occasional special tours covering subjects such as Winchester’s Waterways, Medieval Jewish Winchester and Crime and Punishment.
